About
The HDFS Grad Student Development and Discovery series began as a conversation between HDFS Graduate Students Laura Cutler, Kathleen McCallops, and Ginnie Sawyer Morris in the fall of 2016. Their discussion centered around the unspoken details of graduate student life—the first year experience, the best place to find student and professional resources, and how to acquire all of the skills necessary to be a successful graduate student. Laura, Kathleen, and Ginnie quickly realized that no departmental course could cover this wide range of material, and so with departmental support, the HDFS Grad Student Development and Discovery series was launched!
The HDFS Grad Student Development and Discovery series is a monthly professional development series organized by graduate students in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences. Sessions are typically held on the second or fourth Friday of every month, from 1:00-2:00pm.
The Grad Student Development and Discovery series provides graduate students with a formal channel for learning about and accessing resources related to both graduate student- and professional-life, as well as an opportunity for networking with fellow graduate students. Monthly topics are carefully chosen based on graduate student needs and interests and have included subjects such as writing grants, attending and presenting at professional conferences, navigating sensitive academic conversations, instructing undergraduate courses, and securing non-academic positions post-graduation.
