The National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities, led by Steven Eidelman, H. Rodney Sharp Professor of Human Services Policy and Leadership, and Nancy Weiss, instructor in HDFS, has been awarded $200,000 over two years to establish the Jewish Leadership Institute on Disability and Inclusion. 3rd Annual Jane Davidson Forum on Play was held on June 2nd.  Hosted by the Laboratory preschool and the Delaware Institute for Excellence in Early Childhood.  The Play Forum was created in honor of former UD Lab Preschool Master Teacher Jane Davidson, who had an extraordinary ability to teach young children through play. Eight University of Delaware alumni were honored as recipients of the Presidential Citation for Outstanding Achievement, Maggie Leffler Martin, Andrew Schwartz, Katherine Hutchinson, Joseph Claricurzio, John Knarr, Ping Xu, Sean Wang and Ming Xu.

Katherine Hutchinson, who earned her MS in maternal-child nursing in 1986 and Ph.D. in family studies in 1994 at UD, is associate professor in the New York University College of Nursing. Serving as principal and co-investigator on numerous National Institutes for Health-funded HIV risk-reduction studies in the United States and abroad, Hutchinson also has developed instruments and models for family-based HIV risk reduction interventions. Click here to read the UDaily article.

Delaware is one of nine states that will share $500 million in grant money won in a high-profile competition intended to jump-start improvements in often-overlooked early childhood programs.

Ali McDonough, a Human Services major at UD, and her father met with Vice President Joe Biden in the West Wing of the White House to talk about childhood cancer.  The McDonough family started The Andrew McDonough B+ (Be Positive) Foundation in 2007 after Andrew died from complications of Leukemia when he was 14. B+ was Andrew’s blood type and became the family motto throughout his fight — to “Be Positive”.  Vice President Biden was presented with his a B+ tee shirt.  The B+ Foundation (www.BePositive.org) funds childhood cancer research and financially assists families of children with cancer nationwide. To date, B+ has awarded over $550,000 in research grants. This year alone, B+ has awarded over $600,000 of financial assistance to families in 49 states (only missing Wyoming!).

Beth Mineo, Dan Fendler, Phyllis Guinivan, Gary Mears and Sonja Rathel, Center for Disabilities Studies staff and project coordinators, with Rochelle Brittingham, graduate assistant at CDS and the Disaster Resource Center at the University of Delaware, attended the FEMA Region III Summit on Assistive Technology Reuse and Emergency Management, an invitation-only meeting held at the Pass It On Center in Philadelphia. Pass It On is the national technical assistance center for the reutilization of assistive technology. The purpose of the Federal Emergency Management Agency meeting was to address the role of reused assistive technology in emergency management. Speakers included key national and regional leaders in Emergency Management and services for people with functional needs. Marcia Nickle, emergency preparedness manager in the Office of Campus and Public Safety at UD, and representatives from state agencies and Goodwill of Delaware and Delaware County also represented Delaware at this meeting.

Beth Mineo presented “Future Directions for Communication Intervention Research and Severe Disabilities.” at the 2011 AUCD Annual Meeting and Conference in November. The theme was “The Journey Continues: 40 Years Advancing Equity and Excellence through Research, Education and Service.” It marked the founding of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities network and provided a special opportunity for network members and partners to share their interests, talents and perspectives.

HDFS faculty Jason Hustedt, Myae Han, Jennifer Vu and Rena Hallam were awarded a new $2 million federal research study by the Administration for Children, Youth, and Families in the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services. National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities program, June 28-July 2, was designed to help executive leaders from Middle European countries understand the importance of influencing public policy or resources to allow for people with mental disabilities to shift from institutional care to community services.  Participants came from 12 different countries, including Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Slovakia.

University of Delaware’s National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities (NLCDD) developed, in partnership with the Tizard Center at the University of Kent (UK), a two-part leadership development program in Budapest, Hungary called “Leading Change – From Institutional to Community Based Services for People with Mental Disabilities.”

The Head Start Center, UD Early Learning Center/New Directions Early Head Start has been selected to receive a 2011 Head Start Body Start Play Space Grant that will provide the funds to improve the playground at the Wilmington Early Learning Center.

The University of Delaware has been named to the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction, making it the only university in the state to receive this federal recognition of community service.

Nationally, 851 institutions applied for the 2010 Honor Roll, which recognizes colleges and universities that “reflect the values of exemplary community service and achieve meaningful outcomes in their communities.” Of those, 641 were admitted, 511 were named to the Honor Roll, and 114 — including UD — received Honor Roll “with distinction.

This is the University’s fourth consecutive year of being named to the Honor Roll and its second year of being honored with distinction. It last received that honor in 2008.

UD was recognized primarily for two community services: the campus-wide partnerships with the Food Bank of Delaware (FBD) and the Early Learning Centers in Newark and Wilmington.

Globalization is creating an environment where individuals of very different cultural backgrounds are interacting with each other in all spheres of life as never before.  Everyone is being exposed to different ways of thinking, cultural values and new forms of family life.

Developmental Resilience Symposium – April 21, 2011

At a day-long symposium hosted by the University of Delaware’s College of Education and Human Development, experts from Virginia Tech University, University of North Carolina and University of Minnesota discussed the resilience of children who have better than expected developmental and education outcomes despite the presence of poverty, trauma and other risk factors.

Over 100 UD faculty, students, and professionals from the community were on hand to hear how the study of childhood resilience began in the 1970s and how it has evolved from a study of “who is resilient and why” to “what factors can we control, not only to boost resilience, but protect children from factors that place them at risk.”

The First Friends preschool program at John G. Leach School, a Colonial School District school for children with special needs turns the familiar practice of mainstreaming disabled children into traditional classrooms upside down by bringing the nondisabled into five of Leach’s preschool classrooms.
The article addresses the benefits of reverse mainstreaming at Leach. It features teachers who frequently serve as cooperating teachers for our ECE student teachers.  Dr. Michael Gamel-McCormick was interviewed for the article.  “Classes Let Kids help Kids” by Edward Kenney from The News Journal.

The at UD Children’s Campus Summer Art Camp Diane Lawler, Kindergarten Teacher & Artist in Residence, taught children ages 8 – 11 to view art through many different experiences both in and out of the newly renovated, light filled studio located in the Laboratory Preschool/College School facility. Field trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, and The Delaware Art Museum enabled the children to experience first hand the works of master artists. Back in the studio, campers explored a variety of two and three-dimensional techniques including; painting, printmaking, sculpture, clay, mosaics, and more.
